Last reviewed: June 2026. Fast roaming helps wireless clients move between access points with less interruption, especially for Wi-Fi calling, video meetings, scanners, and mobile workstations.
The three standards to know
802.11k helps clients understand nearby access points. 802.11v helps steer clients toward better options. 802.11r can speed authentication during roaming. Together, they can improve roaming, but only when clients support them properly.
When not to enable everything blindly
Some older or low-cost devices do not behave well with fast roaming features, especially 802.11r. Always test phones, laptops, printers, smart devices, and barcode scanners before enabling fast roaming across a production network.
A & G Internet Services can test roaming, tune access point placement, and verify Wi-Fi calling performance across your home or office.
