Last reviewed: June 2026. The original title used the word fiberglass, but the better term for this topic is fiber optic cabling. Fiber can be useful when a home needs high-speed network links, detached-building connectivity, or a long-term backbone between equipment locations.
When fiber makes sense at home
Fiber is useful for long cable runs, electrical isolation between buildings, high-speed uplinks, and network backbones that may outlive several generations of routers and switches.
What to plan before installation
Plan conduit, pull paths, bend radius, termination points, spare strands, labeling, and the equipment that will convert fiber to Ethernet. A good installation is documented so future repairs and upgrades are easier.
A & G Internet Services can review whether fiber, copper Ethernet, coax, or point-to-point wireless is the right fit for your property.
